Are you a recording studio?

Yes. We're a recording studio. But take any ideas you have about a recording studio and throw them out the window. We like to think of ourselves as a production environment - somewhere you'd love to make music. We're not about you putting a second mortgage down to record something that's quality. We want to work with you and surprise you by how good your recordings can sound.

How much does a recording project cost?

1. Check out the Rates page.
2. That varies quite a bit. It depends on a lot of things, the foremost being how much you want it to cost. We can record a track in an hour, or in a day, or in a week. The more time and money you put into your project, the better it will sound. We're committed to working with you to give you the best sound within your budget. We're open to meeting with you and discussing costs, and suggesting ways that your recording project can actually make your money back (it's true!). It's about the music for us, not the money. All money does is keep a roof over our heads and allow us to spend time working with wonderful people like you!

Who's the engineer? Who's the producer? Can I bring in my own people? Do you have someone that can play [insert instrument here]?

Yes. Our engineer is Adam Burwash, as you can see on the staff page. He will also work as a co-producer with your band if required. We're open to you bringing in your own engineer, producer, and instrumentalists, or we can provide them for you.

What happens if I sign with Red Flame?

If you meet our requirements, you're more than welcome to apply to be a signed Red Flame artist. What happens after that is largely up to you. We're here to help you record, promote, and sell your music. We're not here to change your style and give you a tour bus and shove you out on the road. With Red Flame, you get almost complete creative control - you're still you. This means that the main force behind making your music great is still - who else - you. We're here to help prop you up and get you exposed, but superstardom is up to you!

Red Flame is "a division of Academe Design" what does that mean?

It means that you put a different name on your cheques. That's about it. Being a division of a larger company helps us out a lot - we have access to resources that bands often need. Music is a very fluid creation process, and having to account for every penny and every minute spent with us just isn't going to happen. We don't dislike bean counters, but we let them do their job and hope they stay away from us creative types as much as possible.

Can you master my project? Can I record something there and mix it myself?

Sometimes. Red Flame uses digital audio files that will work with practically any audio program in practically any major studio. Your project can be recorded here and mixed or mastered elsewhere if you want. We also do mastering for smaller studios. Always ask us first if you'd like to record something yourself for use in a project we're mixing - we'll give you the requirements you need to add your tracks to projects.

What's preproduction?

The most important and overlooked part of the recording process. Preproduction involves taking an artist or a band and turning vague ideas into songs. Basically, it covers everything from the time that the lyrics are finished to the time that the final tracks are recorded. Proper preproduction saves you time and money and makes your music sound great.

This is Citibank calling. Is Jack there?

No, I'm sorry. This is Red Flame. There's no one here by the name of Jack. I've never met him. He must have had the phone disconnected. No, I don't know him.
